U.S. CENTENNIAL OF FLIGHT COMMISSION SIGNS LICENSING AGREEMENT WITH WELCOME ENTERPRISES
Welcome Enterprises Celebrates 100 years of Art, Literature and Flight

Washington, D.C.
March 20, 2003

Readers of all ages will soon be able to explore the journey flight has taken throughout the last 100 years. And, as a result of a licensing agreement between the U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission and Welcome Enterprises, Inc., Welcome Enterprises will have the right to use the Commission logo in connection with the design, advertisement and promotion of its book, Flight: A Celebration of 100 Years in Art and Literature.

The book, which was published in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, documents the centennial of powered flight with contributions from writers of science fiction, poetry, aviation, literature, science and politics, including Robert Frost, Joni Mitchell, Chuck Yeager, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, John Travolta, John F. Kennedy, Walter Cronkite, Diane Ackerman and Ray Bradbury.

“The invention of the airplane by Wilbur and Orville Wright revolutionized the human experience and provided new directions for the imagination,” said J.R. Dailey, chairman of the U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission. “This book will help readers understand that powered human flight, which once seemed impossible, could indeed be accomplished through a disciplined focus of determination and passion.”

The U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission is coordinating a national outreach campaign, Centennial of Flight: Born of Dreams – Inspired by Freedom, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ first powered flight and the century of accomplishments that followed. The Commission also is advising the President, Congress and federal agencies on the most effective ways to encourage and promote national and international participation in commemoration. More information, as well as a calendar of events, may be found online at http://www.centennialofflight.gov.
